The founding story of KombiMED

June 2017. One person, one phone call and a problem nobody wanted to solve.

June 2017

It all started with a single request. A major Kazakh distributor could not get an answer from a European manufacturer for a simple delivery of spare parts for a Siemens system. Emails got lost in the thread, the language barrier complicated negotiations, deadlines slipped and patients were left waiting for their test results.

Pavel Komar, then still working in global procurement, picked up the phone and closed a deal in 72 hours that had been stuck for three months. The next day three more similar requests came in. Within a week, fifteen. It became clear: there was an enormous gap between Western manufacturers and the laboratories of Central Asia, and someone had to fill it.

That is how KombiMED GmbH was registered in Dortmund. It was not meant as yet another distributor, but as an independent procurement partner speaking the languages of Germany, Kazakhstan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan at the same time. From day one the company was built around three principles: speed, transparency and respect for existing distribution channels.

When “no spare part” means “no diagnosis”

How we helped a laboratory in Almaty bring its QIAGEN GeneReader sequencer back online.

QIAGEN GeneReader, Almaty

A major private laboratory in Almaty performs oncological NGS sequencing on the QIAGEN GeneReader platform. The instrument broke down, and a specific module and a set of cold-chain reagents were needed. The local distributor quoted a lead time of 14–16 weeks. That meant dozens of patients with suspected cancer waiting for a diagnosis for more than three months.

KombiMED took on the request:

  • Direct contact with the QIAGEN product manager in Germany
  • Parallel processing of export documents and CMR
  • Consolidated shipment with 2–8 °C temperature control
  • Registration support on the Kazakh side

Instead of 14–16 weeks. The laboratory resumed accepting oncology samples and not a single patient was left without a diagnosis.

€550,000: the first big deal

In 2018 KombiMED signed its first truly major contract: the supply of a system for cytological screening and early cancer diagnosis from a leading Japanese corporation to a state oncology network in Central Asia.

The deal, worth €550,000, included not only the instrument itself but also a three-year reagent contract, training for cytologists, method validation and integration with the laboratory information system.

This project was a turning point: KombiMED proved that a small German company could handle complex multi-party deals at the level of global corporations, working with a Japanese manufacturer, German logistics, a Central Asian client and regulators in three jurisdictions simultaneously.
