A histology laboratory is a chain: fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, coverslipping, archiving. Each station sets the pace for the next, and the weakest one decides the turnaround time. We equip the whole chain from European manufacturers — so the instruments are chosen to work together, not just individually.
Automated fixation, dehydration, clearing and paraffin infiltration.
Paraffin embedding and block preparation for microtomy.
Rotary microtomes and cryostats for thin tissue sections.
Automated H&E, special stains and coverslipping.
Throughput in histology is set by batch sizes and run times, not by the fastest instrument. The equipment list follows from the daily specimen count and the turnaround the clinicians expect.
| 1 · Grossing & fixation | Specimen description and trimming at a ventilated grossing station; formalin fixation. Fume extraction is not optional here. |
|---|---|
| 2 · Processing | Dehydration, clearing and paraffin infiltration, usually overnight. Processor capacity in cassettes per run sets the daily ceiling for the whole lab. |
| 3 · Embedding | Orienting tissue in paraffin blocks. Manual work — the number of stations and hot/cold plates sets how many technicians can work in parallel. |
| 4 · Sectioning | Rotary microtomes for paraffin; cryostats for frozen sections during surgery, where minutes count. |
| 5 · Staining & coverslipping | Automated H&E and special stains; linked coverslippers remove a manual step and a source of variation. |
| 6 · IHC | Immunohistochemistry stainers for diagnostic and predictive markers — where quality control matters most (see below). |
| 7 · Digital pathology | Whole-slide scanners and viewing software for remote reporting, second opinions and archiving. |
Formalin and xylene need extraction at every open workstation — grossing, embedding, staining. It is a building decision as much as an equipment one, and belongs in the plan before the instruments.
Cassette and slide printers with barcodes keep one specimen linked to one patient through seven stations. Most identification errors happen at handover points, not inside the instruments.
Paraffin blocks and slides must be kept for years. Archive cabinets need floor space — and the floor has to carry them.
Without external quality assessment, laboratories disagree on HER2 status in up to 20 % of cases — and HER2 decides whether a patient receives targeted therapy. NordiQC is the reference scheme for immunohistochemistry; ISO 15189:2024 requires EQA participation for every examination, IHC included.
